Since 1940 she sang on the stages of Switzerland (before that she was a dramatic actress). In 1952 she performed at the Bayreuth Festival (parts of Freya in the Rhine Gold and Sieglind in The Valkyrie). Since 1953 she has performed in the USA (since 1958 at the Metropolitan Opera as Salome and others). Participated in the world premiere of op. Egk’s “Irish Legend” (1955, Salzburg Festival). In 1959 Spanish. in Covent Garden the part of Salome. In the same place, in 1967, she performed as the Dyer’s Wife in Op. “Woman without a shadow” by R. Strauss. Other parties include Turandot, Lady Macbeth, Electra. In 1977 she returned to drama. scene. Author of memoirs (1996).
