She made her debut in 1960 (Grand Opera, part of Amneris). In 1961 she performed in Bayreuth (Venus in Tannhäuser) with great success. Since 1963 he has been performing at Covent Garden (Eboli in the opera Don Carlos, Amneris, Tosca). Since 1965 at the Metropolitan Opera (she made her debut as Eboli). Her first soprano role was Lady Macbeth (Salzburg Festival, 1964). An outstanding achievement was the performance in the role of Salome (Covent Garden, 1970). Other roles include Carmen, Santuzza in Rural Honor, Azuchen, Ulrik, Jenuf in Janáček’s opera of the same name, and others.
She starred in the title role in the film-opera Carmen (1967, directed by Karajan). Toured in the USSR (1976). Among the performances of recent years are Turandot (1991, Sydney), Baba the Turkish Woman in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress (1994, Salzburg Festival). Recordings include Eboli (conductor Molinari-Pradelli, Foyer), Chimena in Massenet’s Le Sid (conductor I. Kweler, CBS), Lady Macbeth (conductor A. Gatto, Golden Age of Opera).
