Portnov is one of the Leningrad composers of the post-war generation, who has long and successfully worked in the field of various musical and theatrical genres. His music is distinguished by sociability of intonations, soft lyricism, close attention to contemporary themes.

Georgy Anatolievich Portnov was born on August 17, 1928 in Ashgabat. In 1947 he graduated from the secondary school and music school in piano class in Sukhumi. After that, he came to Leningrad, began to study composition here – first at the Music School at the Conservatory, in the class of G. I. Ustvolskaya, then at the conservatory with Yu. V. Kochurov and Professor O. A. Evlakhov.

After graduating from the conservatory in 1955, the active creative activity of the composer unfolded. He creates the ballet “Daughter of the Snows” (1956), music for many feature films (“713th asks for landing”, “In war as in war”, “Seven Brides of Corporal Zbruev”, “Dauria”, “Old Walls”, etc. .), music for more than forty dramatic performances, a large number of songs, pop music, works for children. However, the composer’s focus is on musical comedy, operetta. In this genre, he created “Smile, Sveta” (1962), “Friends in Binding” (1966), “Verka and Scarlet Sails” (1967), “Third Spring” (1969), “I Love” (1973). These five works are different both in the form of musical dramaturgy, and in genre and figurative structure.

In 1952-1955. – Accompanist of amateur groups in Leningrad. In 1960-1961. – editor-in-chief of musical programs of the Leningrad television studio. In 1968-1973. – Deputy Director of the Leningrad Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. S. M. Kirova, since 1977 – editor-in-chief of the Leningrad branch of the publishing house “Soviet composer”, conductor of the orchestra of the Leningrad Academic Drama Theater. A. S. Pushkin.
