Italian composer, prominent master of the Venetian opera school. He created his own original operatic style. Cavalli’s fame was brought by the opera Dido (1641, Venice). A number of his compositions are included in the repertoire of opera houses. Among them are Ormindo (1644, libretto by G. Faustini, staged in 1967 at the Glyndebourne Festival), Jason (1649, Venice), Callisto (1651, Venice, libretto by G. Faustini based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses), ” Xerxes” (1654, Venice), “Erismene” (1656).

In total, he wrote 42 operas on mythological and historical subjects. Among the propagandists of his work are Leppard, the famous singer and conductor Jacobs.
