The debut in the opera took place in 1953 (Florence, “Rigoletto”). In 1965-73 he was chief conductor of the Rome Opera. Since 1975 he has been artistic director of the Chicago Opera. Bartoletti staged a number of premiere productions of operas by contemporary Italian authors. He staged the rarely performed opera Orontea by Honor in Piccolo Scala (1961). Of recent performances, we note the opera “Simon Boccanegra” by Verdi (1996, Rome). Recorded the film-opera Tosca (1976, soloists Kabaivansk, Domingo, Milnes). Recordings also include La Gioconda by Ponchielli (soloists Caballe, Pavarotti, Giaurov, Milnes, Baltsa and others, Decca).
