Russian singer (baritone), German by origin. Debut 1868 (Turin, part of Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor). From 1869 he was a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre, and from 1882-1904 he sang at the Bolshoi Theatre. 1st performer of the parts of Mazepa (1884), Aleko (1893) in the opera of the same name. Participated in the Russian premiere of the opera Siegfried in 1894 (Alberich). He was also the first performer on the Russian stage of the parts of Amonasro (1, Mariinsky Theater), among other parts of Peter in Serov’s “Enemy Force”, Demon, Iago, Germont, Rigoletto, William Tell. One of the leading Russian singers of the late 1877th – early 19th century.
