He has been performing as a conductor since 1923 (La Scala, Manon Lescaut). He was an assistant to Toscanini. In 1928 he performed the opera Nero by Boito in Udine. From 1948 to La Scala, where he worked most of his life. Repeatedly performed with Callas (1954, Spontini’s Vestal; 1955, Norma, etc.). He performed at the Arena di Verona festival in Edinburgh (1957), in 1960 he performed the operas Aida and Don Carlos in Chicago. Carried out a number of outstanding recordings with Callas, among them “Sleepwalker” (soloists N. Monti, Zaccaria, Cossotto), “La Gioconda” Ponchielli (soloists Cappuccili, Cossotto, Vinco), “Un Ballo in Maschera” (soloists Di Stefano, Gobbi, Barbieri, all EMIs).
